The building structures division

B&M Engineering supports private individuals, professionals and local authorities on all their building projects: new construction, renovation, extension or conversion.

We work with timber, concrete, masonry and steel.

Based in Chamonix since 2000, we know mountain buildings and their constraints well: snow loads, seismic activity, sloping sites, and old stone and timber constructions.

Opening up a wall, converting an attic, extending, installing a spa on a terrace…

Whenever a modification affects the structure, an engineer's opinion is essential.

It guarantees the safety of the building, and it is often required by the contractor, the insurer or the co-ownership.

We typically assist with:​

  • Opening or removing a load-bearing wall

  • Creating a stairwell opening or a mezzanine

  • Converting an attic or modifying a roof frame

  • Adding a story or an extension

  • Replacing or strengthening a beam, a floor or a balcony

  • Checking a terrace before installing a spa or hot tub

  • Analyzing cracks, subsidence or deformations

  • Carrying out a structural diagnostic before buying a chalet

What we offer you:​

  • Structural diagnostic: a site visit, an assessment of the existing structure and our recommendations.

  • Structural calculations: sizing of the elements to be created or strengthened, with a calculation report.

  • Strengthening drawings: clear drawings, directly usable by your carpenter or mason.

  • Works monitoring: if you wish, we check on site that the works comply with the design.

We carry out all project management, design and execution missions.

Each mission can also be carried out independently.

In project management, we work within multidisciplinary teams (architect, building services engineer, electrical engineer, quantity surveyor…).

In execution, we work closely with the structural works and carpentry contractors.
